Mr. Suematsu has served as Director-General of the Industrial Science and Technology Policy and Environment Bureau at the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) since June 2016. As the head of this key bureau, he oversees the promotion of Japan’s national innovation strategy and the planning and implementation of national research and development projects. He also oversees industrial standards policy and environmental policy, including Japan’s efforts to combat climate change.

He has helped formulate METI’s Artificial Intelligence Technology Strategy, revisions to the Industrial Standardization Act, and Japan’s response to global climate change ahead of 2050.

Mr. Suematsu has held a number of senior posts at the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF), including Director-General of the Rural Development Bureau. During his time at MAFF, he managed policy planning for food security, forestry and environmental issues, negotiated international fishery agreements, and supported rural development. He has also served as Counselor for the Cabinet Secretariat.

He is an affiliate professor at the University of Tsukuba, Kobe University, and Tokyo University of Agriculture.

Mr. Suematsu is a graduate of the University of Tokyo’s Faculty of Law.

He was born on May 28, 1959 in Saitama Prefecture.
