Mr. Tanaka has served as Director-General of the Trade Policy Bureau at the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry （METI） since July 5, 2017. As head of the Trade Policy Bureau, he oversees all of Japan’s international trade negotiations including the Trans-Pacific Partnership （TPP）, Japan-EU Economic Partnership Agreement, Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership （RCEP）, and Japan-US Economic Dialogue.
Since joining METI in 1985, Mr. Tanaka has held several posts related to trade policy. As Director-General of the Multilateral Trade System Department, he participated in the WTO Ministerial at Bali and negotiated for the Japan-EU EPA.
As Deputy Director-General for International Regional Policy, he was the senior official representing Japan at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations （ASEAN） and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation （APEC）meetings from 2012 to 2013.
While serving as METI’s Director for FTA Affairs, he negotiated Economic Partnership Agreement with the ASEAN, Vietnam, India, Australia, and Switzerland. As director for WTO affairs, he led the rules negotiations and initiated important WTO dispute settlement cases. Between 2000 and 2003, he was assigned to the Japan Machinery Center for Trade and Investment in Brussels to work with the European institutions.
Mr. Tanaka holds a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Tokyo and a LL.M. from Harvard Law School.
He was born on April 2, 1962 in Tokyo.
