Mr. Yanase has served as Vice Minister for International Affairs at the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) since July 2017. He leads all of METI’s international policy operations and represents the ministry in cross-border economic dialogues and negotiations. Mr. Yanase travels alongside the Prime Minister on overseas missions to advise on industrial and energy policy, as well as international trade and investment issues.

Most recently, Mr. Yanase, serving as Director-General of the Economic and Industrial Policy Bureau, led the government-wide activities to design and implement growth strategy of Japan

From December 2012, he served as Executive Secretary to Prime Minister Abe. Previously, Mr. Yanase served as Executive Secretary to the Prime Minister Aso, now Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance.

Mr. Yanase has held several posts since joining the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

While working as Director of the Nuclear Energy Policy Planning Division at the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy, he was key to nuclear energy policy. During his time as Director of the Corporate Tax Policy Division at the Economic and Industrial Policy Bureau, Mr. Yanase was active in discussions on the reduction of effective corporate tax rates.

Among other accomplishments, in 2010, while serving as Director of the Industrial Revitalization Division, Mr. Yanase drafted the Industrial Structure Vision 2010, which laid out Japan's industrial competitiveness challenge and strategy.

Mr. Yanase is a graduate of the University of Tokyo‘s Faculty of Law. He also graduated from Yale Graduate School in Economics.

He was born on July 17, 1961 in Tokyo.
