On Japan’s Shodo Island, there is a growing enthusiasm for leveraging the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) to export local delicacies internationally. Located in the Seto Inland Sea, the picturesque island is home to 30,000 people and a number of local business excited to sell their products abroad.

Making a name overseas

The stylish bottles in the photograph above contain olive oil produced on Shodo Island. A booming mail-order business proves the island’s olive oil already has many fans overseas, and other local businesses are currently devising strategies to promote Shodo Island’s other products internationally as well.

Quality through authenticity

Local soy sauce producer Yamaroku Shoyu aims to promote sales by demonstrating the traditional soy sauce manufacturing process to tourists and teaching them how to recognize the taste of the genuine article. The Yamaroku factory attracts a steady stream of tourists by word of mouth.

Another local business, the Morikuni Shuzo sake brewery, has won tremendous acclaim for its bar, located in a stylishly refurbished old storehouse. The company aims to gain further recognition through exhibitions at trade fairs overseas, though this will require a huge investment of both money and personnel.

Supporting local exports

Although tiny Shodo Island is isolated geographically, local businesses continue to make inroads across the world. JETRO and the Organization for Small & Medium Enterprises and Regional Innovation, Japan, will provide specialized support to meet the individual needs of each company pursuing business overseas.
