Summary
Under the auspices of METI and the Ministry of the Environment, the Energy-Efficient Household Appliance Promotion Forum (provisional name) has been established with the aim of further promoting the widespread use of energy-efficient household appliances (e.g. air conditioners, refrigerators, lighting) as a national movement through collaboration with concerned parties, including household appliance manufacturers/retailers and consumer groups.
The inaugural meeting held today has marked the official start of the forum’s activities.
Driven by its members, the forum will be engaged in the rollout of campaigns to promote energy-efficient household appliances, the wider provision of information on such appliances, the development of domestic energy saving diagnosis tools, and the co-hosting of the “Energy Saving Contest.”
1. Energy-Efficient Household Appliance Promotion Forum
To fulfill its committed target of a 6% emission reduction under the Kyoto Protocol, Japan faces an urgent need to push further ahead with energy conservation measures in the household sector, in which CO2 emissions and energy consumption have been increasing. With significant improvements achieved in the energy efficiency of home electrical products in recent years, encouraging the use of energy-efficient home appliances is highly effective as a energy-conservation measure for the household sector.
Today’s inaugural meeting of the Energy-Efficient Household Appliance Promotion Forum included members that are businesses and organizations that approve the forum’s objective, including household appliance manufacturers/retailers and consumer groups.
