Establishment of the Cool Earth Energy Innovative Technology Plan

Summary
METI finalized the Cool Earth Energy Innovative Technology Plan on March 5, 2008 and hereby releases it.

1. Background
• In May 2007, the Prime Minister announced the “Cool Earth 50” initiative. It proposed the long-term goal of a 50% reduction of the world’s total greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
- Developing innovative technologies is essential to the fulfillment of this goal.
- For this reason, METI has been developing the Cool Earth Energy Innovative Technology Plan through an expert panel established under the leadership of the METI Minister.

2. Past and future panel meetings
First meeting: August 31, 2007
Second meeting: November 27, 2007
Third meeting: March 5, 2008

3. Outline of the Cool Earth Energy Innovative Technology Plan
- Selection of 21 technologies as innovative technologies that should be given higher priority
- Presentation of a technology roadmap on these technologies
- Proposal of desirable ways of international cooperation (e.g., sharing the roadmap with the international community)
