As its mission, METI will propel the Japanese economy by providing information and analytical insights, creating systems that support society and the economy, and enhancing Japan's technological foundations, so that companies, communities, individuals, non-profit organizations, and other players can exercise their capabilities to the fullest and maximize their potential.

Pressing ahead into the 21st century with our new mission, we are witnessing a change of paradigm in business and society, including greater social and economic integration, shrinking families, a graying population, globalization, and more intense conflict between the energy and environmental imperatives.

It is essential that METI carry out the following five goals to place Japan firmly on the path of social and economic growth and, in so doing, contribute to the further development of the global economy.
