Japan and the United States agree to Cooperate on Clean Energy Technologies

1. On November 13, 2009, Prime Minister Hatoyama and President Obama met in Tokyo. It was affirmed the intent of Japan and the United States, as the two leading global investors in energy research and development, to expand their already strong cooperative activities in technology research and development to provide solutions to the challenges of global energy security and climate change. A Fact Sheet which includes the initial areas for the joint activities was released immediately after the summit meeting.

2. The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and U.S. Department of Energy (U.S. DOE) have agreed to accelerate joint research on clean energy technologies and both have just identified the initial areas for the joint activities concluded as "Clean Energy Technologies Action Plan", which supports the "Fact Sheet" announced by the both leaders.

3. METI and U.S. DOE will monitor the activities under this Action Plan and add new research projects as they are developed. Both sides view this cooperation as an opportunity to advance the science needed by doing more, at shared, and thus lower, costs, and at a more rapid pace than either country could achieve working separately. Through this enhanced cooperation on clean energy research, we can accelerate our collective progress toward a clean and secure global energy future.
