The Agency for Natural Resources and Energy (ANRE) has prepared teaching and learning materials for “electricity saving education” in order to promote electricity saving education at elementary and junior high schools in the service areas of Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) and Tohoku Electric Power Co. (Tohoku EPCO).

ANRE also directly dispatches energy conservation experts to some elementary schools to provide electricity saving education.

1. Overview

“Electricity Supply-demand Measures in Summer Time,” a policy issued on May 13 by the Electricity Supply-Demand Emergency Response Headquarters, requires the promotion of the saving of household electricity through electricity saving education.

To enhance public awareness of electricity saving in accordance with this policy, ANRE has prepared teaching and learning materials for electricity saving education that can be used by elementary and junior high schools in classes or as homework during the summer holidays. The materials are available in four types (for lower, middle and higher grades of elementary school and for junior high school students) and will be sent to elementary and junior high schools upon request.

Furthermore, in the project “Energy conservation classes on demand,” ANRE dispatches energy conservation experts to elementary schools to provide specific ways to save electricity and energy in daily life.

Energy conservation class on demand

(1) Teaching and learning materials for electricity saving education

These materials mainly consist of a textbook, a challenge sheet and a teaching guide for teachers. The textbook plainly explains such topics as the current electricity supply-demand situation, the necessity of electricity saving and specific ways to save electricity. The challenge sheet attached to the textbook is designed to motivate students actually to save electricity at their home during the summer holidays, based on what they have learned from the textbook.

ANRE is asking all elementary and junior high schools in the service areas of TEPCO and Tohoku EPCO the number of materials that are needed, which will be sent from late June. Since these materials are also downloadable free of charge via the website below, anybody can obtain them.

ANRE hopes that elementary/junior high schools and families will positively use the teaching and learning materials for electricity saving education and acquire appropriate knowledge about electricity saving to deal with power shortages this summer.

(2) Energy conservation classes on demand

In this project, “Energy-Efficient Home Appliance Concierges”—selected from Energy-Efficient Promotion Advisors certified as home energy conservation specialists by the Energy Conservation Center, Japan—are dispatched to elementary schools to give classes to fourth to sixth graders on such topics as the global environment and energy conservation, usage of electricity in daily life and electricity saving at home.

ANRE is scheduled to implement the project at 1,000 elementary schools across Japan in FY 2011 and is accepting applications from schools.
