Recall (free inspection and repair) of humidifiers imported by Yoshii Electric Co., Ltd.

A serious product accident occurred involving a fire breaking out from a humidifier imported by Yoshii Electric Co., Ltd.

Although the cause of the accident is still under investigation, the fire was presumably caused by a short circuit in the product’s indicator light circuit board, which did not provide the necessary insulation distance.

To prevent further accidents, the company today posted a message on its website and other media to ask users to stop using the products and will start free inspection and repair of the recalled products on September 1, 2011.

The accident was reported as a serious product accident under the provision of Article 35, Paragraph 1 of the Consumer Product Safety Law, and announced on March 11, 2011 as an accident related to a product other than gas or oil equipment and suspected to have arisen from a product (Control No. A201001057).

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) would like to ask the consumers possessing the products to have them inspected and repaired free of charge so as to prevent any further accidents from occurring.

1. Accident phenomenon and recurrence prevention measures

(1) Accident phenomenon
A serious product accident occurred involving a fire breaking out from a humidifier imported by Yoshii Electric Co., Ltd.
Although the cause of the accident is still under investigation, the fire was presumably caused by a short circuit in the product’s indicator light circuit board, which did not provide the necessary insulation distance.

(2) To prevent further accidents, the company today posted a message on its website. From September 1, 2011, Yoshii Electric will also notify users by sending letters to the known purchasers through distributors and by posting notices to users at stores in order to ask them to have the recalled products inspected and repaired (replacement of the circuit board) free of charge.

2. Recalled product: product name, model, quantity, sales period, appearance and identification

  • Product name: Humidifier (trade name: heating type humidifier “Abitelax”)
    Model: ASK-233
  • Recalled quantity: 50,000 units
  • Period in which the product was sold: From September 2003 to February 2006
  • Appearance and identification of the recalled product
    The model “ASK-233” is indicated on both the front control panel and the rear label.

3. Actions by the company

Yoshii Electric will inspect and repair (replacement of the circuit board) the products free of charge from Thursday, September 1, 2011.

4. Notice by the company

  • Posting a message on the website: August 26 (Friday), 2011
  • Sending letters to purchasers through distributors: September 1 (Thursday), 2011
  • Posting notices at stores: September 1 (Thursday), 2011
