Recall (replacement) of electric heaters (halogen heaters) imported by Kohnan Shoji Co., Ltd.
A serious product accident occurred involving a fire starting in an electric heater (halogen heater) imported by Kohnan Shoji Co., Ltd.
The accident was presumably caused by the product's faulty diode used for switching between high and low heat settings, which is believed to have overheated and caused the fire.
To prevent further accidents, the company today posted a message on its website to ask users to stop using the products and will start free replacement of the recalled products, offering alternative products from September 21, 2011.
The accident was reported as a serious product accident under the provision of Article 35, Paragraph 1 of the Consumer Product Safety Law, and announced on February 25, 2011 as an accident related to a product other than gas or oil equipment and suspected to have arisen from a product (Control No. A201000983).
The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) would like to ask consumers possessing the products to have them replaced free of charge by the importer in order to prevent any further accidents from occurring.
1. Accident phenomenon and recurrence prevention measures
- Accident phenomenon A fire broke out from an electric heater (halogen heater) imported by Kohnan Shoji Co., Ltd.
The accident was presumably caused by the product's faulty diode used for switching between high and low heat settings. The diode is believed to have overheated while the low heat setting was selected, letting the resin support catch fire and leading to fire emanating from the product. - To prevent further accidents, the company today posted a message on its website and notices at its outlets. From September 21, 2011, Kohnan Shoji will also notify consumers through leaflets inserted in newspapers and start free replacement of the recalled product.
