FY 2010 Energy Supply and Demand Report (preliminary report)

The Agency for Natural Resources and Energy has released a preliminary report on Japan’s energy supply and demand situation for FY 2010, based on the results of a variety of energy-related statistics. The summary of the report is as follows:

1) Final energy consumption increased 4.0% year on year (a 7.8% increase from FY 1990) due to economic recovery and weather conditions with a hot summer and a severe winter

2) Energy-oriented carbon dioxide emissions increased 4.4% year on year (a 6.0% increase from FY 1990) due to increased energy consumption.

Highlights

1) In the industry sector, energy consumption increased mainly because the output of the manufacturing industry improved due to economic recovery (6.8% year-on-year increase; a 6.1% decrease from FY 1990).

2) In the residential and commercial sector, energy consumption increased mainly as a result of a hot summer and a severe winter (2.8% year-on-year increase; a 35.1% increase from FY 1990).

3) In the transport sector, energy consumption slightly increased (0.9% year-on-year increase; a 6.7% increase from FY 1990).

(Note 1) Note that the report might carry different figures after the final report is fixed because some of the energy-related statistics used for preparation of this preliminary report are based on preliminary data, some necessary statistics are still unavailable at this moment and some data in the statistics used were assumed due to influence of the Great East Japan Earthquake.

Note 2) Energy volume data shown in the reference on the following pages use energy units measured in joules. Oil equivalent kl data (in 1 million kl) will be derived from the PJ data (PJ (petajoule): 10 to the 15th power joule) as shown herein multiplied by 0.0258.

(Oil equivalence: 1 liter oil = 9250kcal = 38.7 MJ; 1MJ = 0.0258 liter)
