Alert for Prevention of Product Accidents Caused by Bicycles

In the four years from FY 2007 (when the accident report system started) to FY 2010, 482 product accidents (including 144 serious product accidents) were caused by bicycles.

In particular, the number of accidents seems to have been increasing recently. The number of accidents in FY 2010 was about double that of FY 2007. Further, it was found that about 60% of the accidents were caused from improper inspection or maintenance, riding manner and other factors that might be possibly prevented by user care.

Considering this situation, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) requested the Consumer Affairs Agency and organizations concerned to cooperate in alerting consumers and disseminating the procedures for safe use of the products in order to prevent any further product accidents caused by bicycles.

  1.  In the four years from FY 2007 (when the accident report system started) to FY 2010, 482 product accidents (including 144 serious product accidents) were caused by bicycles. In FY 2010, the number of accidents (166 cases) was about double that of FY 2007 (90 cases). Accidents resulting from improper inspection or maintenance, riding manner and other factors that might be possibly prevented by user care represent about 60% of the accidents.
  2. Considering these situations, METI prepared leaflets on inspection and maintenance and safe use of bicycles (as attached in Japanese) in order to prevent any preventable product accident by bicycles. In addition, METI distributed the above leaflets to the Consumer Affairs Agency and organizations of manufacturers, importers, retailers of bicycles and other related entities and requested them to cooperate in alerting consumers and disseminating the procedures for safe use of the product.
