Results of FY 2011 top management interviews concerning efforts toward LP gas safety

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) interviewed top management (presidents, etc.) of 13 companies among LP gas sellers registered with METI and safety institutions certified by METI (both offering nationwide services) to ask about their safety policies, specific efforts under their policies, and the state of their extant safety structures. The results are hereby released.

This interview survey was conducted for the first time in FY 2005, and the present one is the fourth.

  1. The number of LP gas accidents involving consumers still remains high, at 185 in 2009 and 204 in 2010. The results of on-site inspections conducted by METI show that violations of laws and regulations have hardly been eradicated; serious violations were found in five out of 17 sites inspected in FY 2009 and three out of 17 in FY 2010, and violators were subjected to administrative disposition or guidance.
  2. Considering the above situation, METI conducted an interview survey of top management (presidents, etc.) of LP gas sellers and related institutions1 regarding the following topics, along with their response to the Great East Japan Earthquake.

    1. Policy on securing safety and compliance
    2. Specific safety measures
    3. Response to accidents
    4. Safety concerns
    5. Future of the LP gas sales business
    6. Requests to the government

  3. The results of the survey will be used as input to METI’s LP gas safety administration.
