The First Meeting of JSCA Smart House/Building Standardization and Business Promotion Study Group

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry established the Smart House/Building Standardization and Business Promotion Study Group in the Japan Smart Community Alliance (JSCA) for the discussion of issues regarding the further diffusion of Japanese-style smart houses/buildings. The first meeting of the Study Group was held today.

1. Background

This Study Group was established as an occasion to discuss and formulate the roadmap for each issue summarized in the interim report (announced on February 24, 2012) by the Smart House Standardization Study Group (established in November 2011).

As in the case of the Smart House Standardization Study Group, the chair is Mr. Yasuhiro Hayashi, professor at Waseda University, and one of the vice-chairs is Mr. Masao Isshiki, professor at Kanagawa Institute of Technology. Mr. Masaki Umejima, professor at Keio University and associate director of Auto-ID Laboratory, is also newly appointed as a vice-chair. The Smart House/Building Standardization and Business Promotion Study Group will discuss issues through an integral industry-academia-government effort with private companies as its members.

The Study Group formulates a roadmap for the diffusion of smart houses/buildings (for three years from 2012 to 2014) which summarizes the future efforts to be taken with regard to the following issues. Actions in response to each issue will be examined by the Study Group according to the roadmap.

  1. Identification and development of the transmission media for the key appliances (appliances for generating and storing energy, etc.)
  2. Development of the operating manual
  3. Verification of interconnectivity with other companies' appliances and certification of appliances
  4. Harmonization and cooperation with international standards
  5. Research and study on demand-response technology and standards
