Serious product accidents have occurred in built-in dishwashers manufactured by Rinnai Corporation, causing the products to ignite and leading to expansive damage to surroundings.
These accidents were announced as serious product accidents on January 6 and February 28, 2012, in accordance with Article 35 (1) of the Consumer Products Safety Act, which relates to accidents of unclear origin in products other than gas and oil appliances (Control No. A201100759 & A201101035).
The cause of the accidents was not identified, but it is thought that water leaking inside the products generated a tracking phenomenon or other situation in the circuit boards or connectors, causing the products to ignite and leading to expansive damage to surroundings.
To prevent further accidents, Rinnai will inspect or repair products subject to the recall free of charge from today onward.
The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) would like to ask consumers who have purchased the products in question to have the products inspected or repaired free of charge in order to prevent any further accidents.
1. Nature of the accidents and recurrence prevention measures
1) Nature of the accidents
Two serious product accidents have occurred in built-in dishwashers manufactured by Rinnai Corporation, causing the products to ignite and leading to expansive damage to surroundings, and were reported to METI in accordance with Article 35 (1) of the Consumer Products Safety Act (Control No. A201100759 & A201101035).
The cause of the accidents was not identified, but it is thought that water leaking inside the products generated a tracking phenomenon or other situation in the circuit boards or connectors, causing the products to ignite and leading to expansive damage defacing the surroundings.
2) Recurrence-prevention measures
To prevent further accidents, the company has today posted more information on its website and started sending notices directly to purchasers of the products to be recalled to let consumers know that it will inspect or repair the products free of charge.
