FY 2011 Energy Supply and Demand Report (Preliminary Report)

The Agency for Natural Resources and Energy hereby announces a preliminary report on Japan's energy supply and demand situation for FY 2011, based on the results of a variety of energy-related statistics. The summary of the report is as follows:

1) Final energy consumption decreased by 2.9% year on year (a 4.7% increase from FY 1990) due to the decrease in production, the effect of energy saving, and other factors.

2) Energy-oriented carbon dioxide emissions increased by 4.4% year on year (a 10.7% increase from FY 1990) due to a sequential shutdown of nuclear power plants, the increase in fossil fuel consumption, and other factors.

Highlights

  1. Final energy consumption decreased by 2.9% year on year (a 4.7 % increase from FY 1990) due to the decrease in production, the effect of energy saving, and other factors.
  2. For the final energy consumption according to energy sources, electricity consumption dramatically decreased by 6.2% year on year due to the decrease in production, the effect of energy saving, and other factors, while that of city gas increased by 2.4% year on year.
  3. For the domestic supply of primary energy, nuclear energy decreased by 64.5% year on year, while natural gas and petroleum increased by 15.9% and 2.9% year on year respectively, due to the increase in thermal energy as an alternative to nuclear energy, and other factors.
  4. Energy-oriented carbon dioxide emissions increased by 4.4% year on year (a 10.7% increase from FY 1990) due to a sequential shutdown of nuclear power plants, the increase in fossil fuel consumption, and other factors.

Note 1) Please note that the report might carry different figures after the final report is fixed because some of the energy-related statistics used for the preparation of this preliminary report are based on preliminary data, and some necessary statistics are still unavailable at this time (see References(PDF:556KB) PDF File (in Japanese)).

Note 2) Energy volume data shown in the reference use energy units measured in joules. Crude oil equivalent kl data (in 1 million kl) is derived from the PJ (petajoule: 10 to the 15th power joules) data as shown herein multiplied by 0.0258.
(Crude oil equivalence: 1 liter crude oil = 9250 kcal = 38.7 MJ; 1MJ = 0.0258 liters)
