The Agency for Natural Resources and Energy has promoted a "Green Energy Christmas" program encouraging the use of green renewable energies, such as solar power and wind power, in Christmas-related seasonal events and business activities.

Beginning with the lighting ceremony at LaLaport Toyosu on November 26, 2012, green energy will be used by 157 entities nationwide for illumination or events, or in offices. Furthermore, the "Green Energy Photo Contest 2012" will be held, displaying photos taken during related events by these 157 entities from November 24 to December 26.

Each and every one of us creates a bright, gentle future. We hope that many visitors are able to attend the lighting ceremony and the photo contest.

1. What is "Green Energy Christmas"?

Renewable natural energy sources including solar, water and wind power have recently come into the spotlight.

Through the initiative, "Green Energy Christmas," METI aims to facilitate the use of green energy for setting the mood for Christmas nationwide.

"Green Energy Christmas" is a program with the aim of encouraging the use of green renewable energies such as solar energy and wind power in business activities and seasonal events taking the opportunity of Christmas. Specifically, METI will have the participants use green power through the purchase of a "Green Energy Certificate (See Appendix 1(PDF:225KB) PDF File (in Japanese))."

As a result of this year's publicity, 157 entities (See Appendix 2(PDF:137KB) PDF File (in Japanese)) will participate in the program this year (130 entities in FY 2011). During the period, approximately 2.97 million kWh of green energy an equivalent of the monthly power usage of about 9,900 standard households will be consumed.

2. Lighting Ceremony for Green Energy Christmas

On November 26, 2012, the lighting ceremony of a unique Christmas tree will be held at the main stage of Urban Dock LaLaport Toyosu.

On November 24 and 25, prior to the lighting ceremony, a piece of "Diablock Junior" will be handed out to each child accompanied by a guardian, and they can participate in making the unique Christmas tree at the site.

The Christmas tree made of 15,000 blocks will be around three meters in height. Please enjoy the unique Christmas tree created by children who will take a central role in the future.
