Winner of the Good Design Grand Award 2012: TV Program “Design Ah!”

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has been aiming at expanding Japan’s culture industries overseas, as they are popular even outside Japan as “Cool Japan.”

The “Good Design Award” is Japan’s only award program to comprehensively evaluate and recognize designs, which are part of the culture industries, and is celebrating its 56th anniversary this year.

The Japan Industrial Design Promotion Organization (JIDPO) is the organizer of the Good Design Award 2012, and announced the winner of the Good Design Grand Award (Prime Minister’s Award), the highest prize in this award program.

1. Good Design Grand Award 2012 (Prime Minister’s Award)

TV Program: Design Ah!
Winner: Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK)

Evaluation comment from the Judging Committee
The winner provided an innovative point of view through developing the theme “Design” as a TV program for children. This program has a huge impact on Japan’s design education. The winner finished the program’s design and related creative points of view with highly-qualified expressions that even professionals acclaimed, while taking advantage of motion graphics and sound design.

2. Summary of the Good Design Award

The Good Design Award (established in 1957) is a program to select, evaluate and encourage products with distinguished designs in Japan’s industry. This program has raised awareness about design among Japanese industries and significantly contributed to the improvement of their international competitiveness.

The examination for this year’s Good Design Award was conducted with attention to adding value to people’s lives, and to creating social and cultural value on the basis of the program’s history of more than 50 years. Through such examination, the program aims to make people’s lives, industry, and society more affluent and sustainable.
