Recall of Dishwashers with a Dryer Manufactured by Sanyo Electric Co., Ltd (Collection of Products)

Serious product accidents have occurred in dishwashers with a dryer manufactured by Sanyo Electric Co., Ltd, causing the products to ignite.

These accidents were announced as a serious product accident on October 2 and 30, 2012, in accordance with Article 35 (1) of the Consumer Product Safety Act, which concerns accidents of unclear origin in a product other than a gas or oil appliance (Control Nos. A201200482 and A201200549).

The cause of the accidents is now under investigation, but it is thought that the caulked section at the connection between a terminal and a lead of the heater overheated during product use and due to the weakness of the section, caused the products in question to ignite.

To prevent further accidents, Sanyo will collect the products subject to the recall from January 22, 2013.

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) encourages consumers who have purchased the products in question to make use of the manufacturer's collection service in order to prevent any further accidents.

1. Nature of the accident and recurrence-prevention measures

1) Nature of the accident

Three serious product accidents occurred in dishwashers with a dryer manufactured by Sanyo Electric Co., Ltd, causing the products to ignite. These accidents were reported to METI as a serious product accident in accordance with Article 35 (1) of the Consumer Product Safety Act (Control Nos. A201100552, A201200482 and A201200549). In addition, one similar accident in which the product did not catch fire was reported to the National Institute of Technology and Evaluation (NITE).

No injuries have occurred as a result of the four accidents.

The cause of the accidents is now under investigation, but it is thought that the caulked section at the connection between a terminal and a lead of the heater was overheated during product use and due to the weakness of the section, caused the products in question to ignite.

2) Recurrence-prevention measures

To prevent further accidents, Sanyo issued a press release and posted further information on its website on January 22, 2013. In addition, the company will announce the occurrence of the accidents in newspapers to be issued on January 23, and send a notice to known purchasers of the recalled products through distributors to notify that it will provide collection services for the recalled products.
