Information Security Awareness Campaign Jointly Launched by the Public and Private Sectors-February is Information Security Month-

The government designates February as "Information Security Month" so as to enhance promotion and enlightenment activities for information security. The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) will conduct seminars, contests, etc. on information security as well as distribution of awareness posters through cooperation between public and private sectors.

As information technology (IT) penetrates further into people's lives and socioeconomic activities, Internet users face higher risks of suffering from computer viruses, unauthorized access or other security breaches. This campaign is aimed at preventing such risks and increasing people's awareness and knowledge of precautions for the safe use of IT.

1. Awareness campaign jointly launched by the public and private sectors

METI, Symantec Corporation, Trend Micro Incorporated, McAfee, Inc., and the Information-Technology Promotion Agency, Japan (IPA), will jointly distribute special posters and leaflets to disseminate information security measures to educational institutions including elementary and junior high schools, as well as electronics retail stores, etc.
In addition, awareness activities using an information site jointly developed by public and private sectors will be also conducted.

2. Other awareness activities of METI

Holding internet security classes

MEIT is holding seminars to explain about secure and safe use of the Internet using PCs and smartphones, etc. in a plain way. Please see the URL below for details.

Holding an information security contest (CTF*)

METI will conduct a nation-wide "CTF (Capture The Flag) Challenge Japan 2012" on February 2 (Saturday) and 3 (Sunday) to provide an opportunity to gain experience on technical practices regarding information security. Please see the URL below for details.

*CTF is a mock battle simulating attacks from the outside, etc. on information security. A contest to compete on skill-level in order to attain flags that represent information stored in a game system and associated knowledge will be conducted.

3. Other awareness activities of the IPA

The Information-Technology Promotion Agency, Japan (IPA) will undertake efforts such as airing advertisement videos on public transportation. Please click on the URL below to see the videos which have been posted.
