METI will Hold an “Intellectual Property Forum” as a Business-Academia Collaboration EventToward New Efforts of SMEs Effectively Making Use of Technology Retained by Universities and Other Organizations
The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) will hold a forum on intellectual property on Wednesday, February 20, 2013, for the purpose of enabling small- and medium-size enterprises (SMEs) to smoothly and effectively make use of intellectual property.
In this forum, researchers will introduce various technologies to encourage SMEs to effectively use the intellectual property maintained by universities or other organizations. A business-matching event will be held to coordinate such intellectual property and SMEs on an individual basis.
METI will invite people who are interested in intellectual property and belong to SMEs, industry supporting organizations, local governments, financial institutions, or universities.
1. Objectives of this forum
Currently, many universities have been actively providing technology that they maintain to society from the viewpoint of facilitating its effective use as well as to contribute to society. It is highly expected that the effective use of such technology by many SMEs will help to increase business performance in the short term, such as by motivating them to develop new products, and eventually to facilitate revitalization of regional economies.
METI has selected various intellectual property maintained by universities that SMEs will be able to utilize and compiled it into one collection booklet titled "Valuable Intellectual Property for SMEs: Best 30," which introduces the selected technology in plain language.
The forum will also provide a meeting in which researchers will introduce and illustrate around five technologies selected from the booklet that could be effective and useful for SMEs. In addition, METI will hold a business-matching event to coordinate all the technology provided in the booklet and SMEs on an individual basis, aiming at enabling SMEs to effectively use such intellectual property.
