Announcement of Nadeshiko Brand as Examples of Enterprises that Encourage Women’s Success-First Effort to Select Listed Enterprises that are Outstanding for Encouraging Women’s Success-
On February 26, 2013, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) have jointly selected and publicized listed enterprises that are exceptional in encouraging women's success in the workplace, and granted them the "Nadeshiko Brand" designation.
Providing women with opportunities for success in the workplace is considered to contribute to facilitating business innovation as well as enhancing competitiveness in global markets, and is a touchstone for the progress of diversity management.
1. Details of the Nadeshiko Brand
The Nadeshiko Brand consists of enterprises which encourage women to play active roles in the workplace, including the development of environments in which such women are able to further their careers, and were selected from those listed on the first section of the TSE on an industry basis. These enterprises are also considered to be those with growth potential since they have the management ability to utilize various human resources as well as flexibility in assessments of their environments.
In the selection process, METI and TSE selected about 70 enterprises from the entire first section of the TSE, after scoring Note 1 them based on two factors: [i] conducting career support for women and [ii] supporting women in balancing work and family. METI and TSE then further picked the top 17 that have superior financial performance.
This effort is expected to create a synergistic effect with the Diversity Management Selection 100 Note 2, which METI launched and has been promoting since FY2012, in terms of expanding the base from which enterprises will encourage women's success in the workplace.
Note 1: The Japan Research Institute, Limited, which undertakes survey and analysis of environmental, social and governance (ESG) matters inside and outside Japan, conducted the scoring of the candidate enterprises.
Note 2: The Diversity Management Selection 100 is a project in which METI selects and recognizes enterprises that achieve certain results, such as creation of innovation and improvement of productivity by utilizing various human resources, including women, foreigners, the elderly, and people with disabilities. METI will publicize the efforts of the enterprises selected as outstanding diversity management enterprises as best practices. This project will continue in and after FY2013, and around 100 enterprises are to be selected in total. For FY 2012, the commemoration ceremony will be held on March 22, 2013.
2. Announcement of a logo

METI created the logo of the Nadeshiko Brand, with the cooperation of Iris Corporation. This logo demonstrates the affiliation with the Diversity Management Selection 100, which was launched in FY2012.
The dots represent human resources, and the upward slope to the right represents the growth of business due to the utilization of a large variety of human resources, all of which are combined with a balloon representing the creation of a new opinion or idea. METI expects that enterprises selected as the Nadeshiko Brand will utilize the logo as a symbol of enterprises that create and develop new values, as well as increasing the popularity of the logo with the public.
