Agency for Natural Resources and EnergyAfrica-Japan Ministerial Meeting for Resources Development to be HeldInternational Resource Meeting for the First Time in Japan Led by the Initiative of Japan

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC) will jointly hold the Africa-Japan Ministerial Meeting for Resources Development on May 18, 2013, ahead of the fifth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD V), which will be held on June 1 to 3, 2013.

1. Outline and purpose of the meeting

The meeting, co-chaired by the METI Minister and the Minister of Department of Mineral Resources of South Africa, aims to enhance relationships between Japan and Africa through deepening discussion concerning certain issues: [i] promoting investment in the mineral resource field; [ii] human resource development and technology cooperation; [iii] protecting the environment and improving related systems in order to achieve sustainable development; and [iv] encouraging symbiosis with local communities.

In addition, the results of the meeting will be introduced at TICAD V so as to further promote relationship in mineral and natural resources between Japan and Africa.

As additional information, on the occasion of this meeting, the Japan Sustainable Mining, Investment and Technology Business Forum 2013 (J-SUMIT) will be held on May 16 to 17, 2013.

*Note: Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD):
TICAD is an international conference led by the Government of Japan every five years, targeting the development of Africa. In 2008, the fourth TICAD was held, and 41 heads of state and leaders from African countries attended, as well as more than 3,000 participants from international and other organizations.
