On March 28, 2013, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, Indonesia (CMEA) co-hosted "APEC Workshop on Getting Credit in Indonesia" in Jakarta, with government officials and experts from Japan and Indonesia. This workshop aims to facilitate activities of SMEs and venture businesses in Asia-Pacific region, particularly in Indonesia, by improving getting credit environment in Indonesia.

1. Background and results of the workshop

  1. APEC has been implementing the "Ease of Doing Business (EoDB)" initiative to improve "Doing Business" indicators , prepared by the World Bank and International Finance Corporation (IFC). The EoDB initiative focuses on five priority areas: [i] starting a business; [ii] getting credit; [iii] enforcing contracts; [iv] dealing with construction permits; and [v] trading across borders so as to advance structural reform in the Asia-Pacific region. As a champion economy of "getting credit" METI and CMEA co-hosted "APEC Workshop on Getting Credit in Indonesia" in Jakarta, Indonesia, on March 28, 2013.
  2. Since last year, both governments have been conducting researches on getting credit environment in Indonesia with the cooperation of the government of Indonesia. The research revealed that it is important to strengthen legal rights of creditors by improving asset-based lending system and by promoting real property registration system in order to improve getting credit environment. In the discussion, some participants pointed out that the efforts to raise awareness of the real property registration system would also contribute to promoting investment in and development of infrastructure in Indonesia.
  3. METI expects that better getting credit environment provides enterprises with more opportunities to expand their businesses and trigger innovation and strong economic growth in this region.
  4. The results of the workshop will be reported to APEC Ministers Responsible for Trade (MRT) Meeting to be held in Surabaya, Indonesia, on April 20 and 21, 2013.
