Basic Plan for the Japan Pavilion in Expo Milano 2015 was Formulated

The Expo Milano 2015 will be held in a suburb of Milan, the Republic of Italy, with the theme titled "Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life". The Government of Japan plans to participate, with the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF), and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) as organizers.

Japan plans to exhibit the Japan Pavilion, and in preparation, the Japan Pavilion Planning Committee was established under the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), which will also take part in the Expo. METI hereby announces that the committee has compiled a basic plan for the Japan Pavilion that includes Japan's message to be conveyed through the Japan Pavilion, the basic concept of the exhibition, as well as other information.

1. Basic concept of the Japan Pavilion exhibitions

  1. At the Expo, participants are asked to seek global challenges concerning food issues and their possible solutions along with presenting directions toward the solutions, as is seen in the theme titled "Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life." To meet the request, Japan will show visitors Japan's efforts and measures contributing to common global challenges facing all humankind, such as population explosion and food security, as well as food satiation and starvation (for details, please see Appendix(PDF:736KB) PDF File (in Japanese) ).
  2. At the same time, through the Pavilion, Japan will promote the attractiveness of Japanese food and food culture as well as the depth of food and culture to visitors, taking advantage of the Expo's characteristics, i.e., a site where many people visit from around the world. Japan also will utilize the opportunity to cultivate and foster the potential of the related industries and regional new businesses in Japan.

2. Japan's message to be conveyed by the Japan Pavilion and its basic concept

  1. Japan will convey the following message to visitors through the Japan Pavilion:
Japan believes that its various efforts in the fields surrounding the agriculture, forestry and fisheries industry as well as food, and its various knowledge and skills that are found throughout Japanese food and food culture will contribute to solutions to common global challenges facing all humankind. Japan also believes that such contributions will cultivate approaches toward a future symbiotic society with diversity and sustainability (with a sub-message: the following Japanese concepts will save the world: Itadakimasu (I humbly receive this meal), Gochisousama (gratitude for the meal), Mottainai (waste not), and Osusowake (sharing with others).
  2. For details of the basic Japan Pavilion concept, please see the Appendix(PDF:905KB) PDF File (in Japanese).

3. Coming schedule

According to the basic plan that the committee has compiled, the Government of Japan is to study the details of the exhibition, such as construction, events, and displays, and to lay the foundations for the Pavilion by the end of 2013.
