- Survey of Factory Location Trends: 2012 Preliminary Report (January-December)
The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) conducted a Survey of Factory Location Trends targeting businesses in manufacturing, electricity supply, gas supply, and heating supply sectors that acquired 1000 m2 or more of land in 2012 for the purpose of constructing their factories. METI hereby announces that it has compiled the results into a report.
The number of new factory locations acquired across the country between January and December 2012 was 1,229 (up 41.1 % on a year-on-year basis), covering a total area of 3,144 ha (up 207.4% on a year-on-year basis). In addition, the number of new factory locations acquired by sectors other than the electricity supply sector was 940 (up by 9.8% on a year-on-year basis), covering a total area of 1,105 ha (up by 11.4% on a year-on-year basis).
- The total number of new factory locations increased 41.4% on a year-on-year basis, and the total area increased 207.4% on a year-on-year basis.

The number of new factory locations in 2012 is on the increase for the second consecutive year since 2010.

- The number of new factory locations in sectors other than the electricity supply sector increased 9.8% on a year-on-year basis, and the total area increased 11.4% on a year-on-year basis.

<Reference> Factory locations in the areas affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake
The number of new factory locations in the seven prefectures covered by the Disaster Relief Act after the Great East Japan Earthquake (Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi, Fukushima, Ibaraki, Tochigi, and Chiba, not including Tokyo) was 246 (up 89.2 % from the 130 of the previous year), and the total area of factory locations in these seven prefectures was 799 ha (up 412.9 % from the 156 ha of the previous year).
In addition, the number of new factory locations in sectors other than the electricity supply sector was 193 (up 50.8 % from the 128 of the previous year), and the total area increased 268 ha (up 74.0 % from the 154 ha of the previous year).
