Agency for Natural Resources and EnergyAnnouncement Regarding the Present Status of Introduction of Facilities Generating Renewable Energy as of May 31, 2013

The Agency for Natural Resources and Energy (ANRE) compiled the present status of the introduction of facilities generating renewable energy as of May 31, 2013, and hereby announces the results.

The total combined capacity of such facilities from April 1, 2012, to May 31, 2013, reached about 3,359,000 kW.

In addition, ANRE will conduct a survey of photovoltaic power facilities for non-households that satisfy predetermined requirements in order to determine their present status.

The total combined capacity of such facilities between April 1, 2012, and May 31, 2013, reached about 3,359,000 kW, of which photovoltaic power facilities accounted for 3,215,000 kW.

Facilities for generating renewable energy (type of source) Combined total capacity of facilities before FY2011 Combined total capacity of facilities that began operating in FY2012 Combined total capacity of facilities that began operating in FY2013 (as of May 31, 2013)
Photovoltaic power (for households) About 4,400,000 kW 1,269,000 kW 279,000 kW
Photovoltaic power (non-household) About 900,000 kW 706,000 kW 961,000 kW
Wind power About 2,600,000 kW 63,000 kW 2,000 kW
Small and medium hydropower (1,000 kW or more) About 9,400,000 kW 1,000 kW 0 kW
Small and medium hydropower (less than 1,000 kW) About 200,000 kW 3,000 kW 0 kW
Biomass power About 2,300,000 kW 36,000 kW* 38,000 kW
Geothermal power About 500,000 kW 1,000 kW 0 kW
Total About 20,000,000 kW 2,079,000 kW 1,280,000 kW

* In addition to the above facilities, ANRE approved those which generate electricity by combusting mixtures of coal and other materials and which began operating in FY2012, from which 350,000 kW of electricity has been generated. However, this method of production is not considered to be 100% biomass power generation by ANRE. Based on this viewpoint, the power generated from these facilities has not been taken into consideration in order to avoid misrepresentation of the figures.

Appendices (in Japanese):

Reference: Survey of photovoltaic power facilities for non-households in order to determine their present status

Before introducing the Feed-in Tariff Scheme, the total capacity of photovoltaic power facilities for non-households with a capacity of 10 kW or more was 900,000 kW. However, after introducing the scheme, the total capacity of newly operating photovoltaic power facilities has been 1,700,000 kW as of May 31, 2013.

The introduction of such facilities requires prior approval from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). METI has already approved facilities with a total capacity of 19,370,000 kW as of May 31, 2013, but some approved facilities have not yet begun construction, or are still under construction.

To cope with this situation, METI will conduct a survey of photovoltaic power facilities for non-households that satisfy predetermined requirements and whose construction is behind schedule, to determine the present status of the facilities, including the facts related to whether or not orders for materials etc. have been placed for the construction of facilities, or facility operators have been determined.
