“Excellent SMEs and Micro Enterprises Selection 300” and “Excellent Shopping Districts Selection 30” Released

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) selected outstanding efforts of SMEs, micro enterprises and shopping districts that showcase leadership in various fields, including the development of innovative products, the creation of new services, contribution to communities and the revitalization of regional economies, and recognize them as model examples called “Excellent SMEs and Micro Enterprises Selection 300” and “Excellent Shopping Districts Selection 30.”

1. Background and outline

SMEs and micro enterprises account for 99% of all enterprises in Japan. They not only bolster regional economies and employment but also are key drivers for Japan’s global competitiveness as well as economic dynamism. Furthermore, shopping districts are the core of regional areas that lead their communities, promote such communities’ attractiveness and enhance the vitality of the communities.

In light of such understandings, METI decided to select outstanding efforts of SMEs, micro enterprises and shopping districts that showcase leadership in various fields, including the development of innovative products, the creation of new services, contribution to communities and the revitalization of regional economies, and recognize them as model examples called “Excellent SMEs and Micro Enterprises Selection 300” and “Excellent Shopping Districts Selection 30.” Through raising public awareness of these efforts, METI aims to enhance the social recognition of the selected entities and make their employees and staff motivated, as well as to foster emulation by others.

These examples were collected with the help of the recommendations from the Organization for Small & Medium Enterprises and Regional Innovation, Japan, the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Japan Finance Corporation, National Federation of Small Business Association, Central Federation of Societies of Commerce and Industry, Shoko Chukin Bank, National Federation of Shopping Center Promotion Associations, and METI’s Regional Bureaus of Economy, Trade and Industry. The collected examples were strictly examined by a committee of external experts, mainly led by Dr. Hiroyuki Itami, Professor, Department of Management of Technology, Graduate School of Innovation Studies, Tokyo University of Science, and Mr. Junzo Ishii, president, University of Marketing and Distribution Sciences. The examined results were finally compiled by the Committee on SME Business Support (chair: Mr. Kinya Tsuruta) under the Council for Small and Medium Enterprise Policy.

METI expects that conveying to the public the information on the selected examples of the 300 enterprises and 30 shopping districts will contribute to increasing the number of SMEs, micro enterprises and shopping arcades that accelerate their efforts in developing innovative products, creating new services, and revitalizing their communities.

2. Future schedule

METI is going to hold a commendation ceremony and exhibition on March 3 and 4, 2014. In addition, it will also publish a booklet compiling the selected efforts of the 300 enterprises and 30 shopping districts.
