Study Group on Creating a Higher Value-added Service Industry to be Held

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) will hold the first meeting of the Study Group on Creating a Higher Value-added Service Industry, which has been established to discuss new policies for increasing high added value in the service industry, a key sector for Japan’s success in economic growth.

1. Background and purpose

In Japan, the service industry accounts for about 70% of the GDP, holding a large weight in both economy and employment. To encourage Japan’s economic growth, it is necessary to enhance productivity and increase high added value in the industry. This approach is also shown as a policy in the Japan Revitalization Strategy: “Create a high value-added service industry.”

Considering the significance of this approach, METI decided to establish a study group of experts involved and hold meetings to discuss specific measures for improving productivity and increasing high added value in the service industry.
