In New Delhi, India, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) held the Japan-India Public-Private Round Table on Renewable Energy under the Japan-India Energy Dialogue (hereinafter referred to as the “Round Table”), and the Energy Efficiency Working Group under Japan-India Energy Dialogue (hereinafter referred to as the “Working Group”).

1. Round Table meeting

Outline of the meeting
On January 13, 2014, METI and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) of India held the Japan-India Public-Private Round Table on Renewable Energy under the Japan-India Energy Dialogue, aiming to promote specific public-private cooperative efforts for the introduction of renewable energy and development of smart grids in Japan and India.

The Round Table was held for the first time in response to the agreement concluded at the seventh Japan-India Energy Dialogue* in New Delhi, India, in September 2013.
*Note: The Japan-India Energy Dialogue is an annual meeting co-chaired by the METI Minister and the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission of India, aiming to expand the Japan-India cooperation in the field of energy.

Details of the meeting
The Round Table was led by the Japanese Business Alliance for Smart Energy Worldwide (JASE-W) and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), with major enterprises involved in photovoltaic power generation, waste-to-energy, accumulators, smart grids and representatives of other energy industries attending. The participants had an active discussion aimed at formulating specific cooperation projects.

They confirmed that they will establish a public-private task force for advancing a detailed study aimed at the utilization of accumulators, the establishment of a financial scheme, and other initiatives. For an outline of the meeting, see Appendix 1(PDF:75KB) PDF File (in Japanese).

2. Working Group meeting

Outline of the meeting
On January 15, 2014, METI and the Ministry of Power of India held the Energy Efficiency Working Group under the Japan-India Energy Dialogue, including the public-private business session, aiming to promote Japan-India cooperation in the field of energy efficiency. The Working Group is one of several working groups created under the Japan-India Energy Dialogue.

Details of the meeting
The Working Group was held with, from both the Japanese and Indian sides, officials from government organizations, people involved in research institutes and assistance organizations related to the energy field, and those involved in major enterprises in the fields of iron and steel, cement and finance attending. Government officials from both sides explained their energy saving policies. Following the explanation, the progress in the joint studies on policies was reported and the participants from the enterprises provided presentations concerning their initiatives for energy saving.

In the final roundup of the meeting, the participants confirmed that they will continue the current joint studies on policies so as to further promote approaches to energy efficiency in the future and that they will seek potential for proactive cooperative efforts, including by studying a finance scheme, from the viewpoint of promoting energy saving technologies, such as coke dry quenching (CDQ) systems, regenerative burners, and technology for waste heat recovery in cement plants.
