Joint Press Release with the Consumer Affairs AgencyRecall of Electric Washing and Drying Machines Imported by Toshiba Home Appliances Corporation (Free Product Inspection and Repair)

A product accident occurred in an electric washing and drying machine imported by Toshiba Home Appliances Corporation, causing the product and its surroundings to ignite, resulting in minor injuries to two people. The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) was informed of this accident as a serious product accident and announced the accident on January 15, 2014, in accordance with Article 35 (1) of the Consumer Product Safety Act, which relates to an accident of unclear origin in a product other than a gas or oil appliance.

The cause of the accident is under investigation, but it is thought that wiring inside the body of the product in question broke, causing the product to ignite. To prevent further accidents, Toshiba Home Appliances issued a press release on February 4, 2014 on its website to provide inspection and repair for the products subject to a recall, including models similar to the product in question, free of charge.

METI would like to encourage consumers who have purchased the products subject to a recall to receive free inspection or repair from the company in order to prevent any further accidents.
