Survey of Factory Location Trends: 2013 Preliminary Report (January–December)

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) conducted a Survey of Factory Location Trends targeting businesses in manufacturing, electricity supply, gas supply, and heating supply sectors that acquired 1,000 m2 or more of land in 2013 (January–December) for the purpose of constructing their factories. METI hereby announces that it has compiled the results into a report.

Outline of the report

The number of new factory locations acquired across the country between January and December 2013 was 1,873 (up by 52.6 % on a year-on-year basis), covering a total area of 7,534 ha (up by 140.1 % on a year-on-year basis).

This significant increase in the number and total area of new factory locations is largely due to the growth of the new factory locations for photovoltaic power generation in the electricity supply sector. Therefore, the number of new factory locations acquired by sectors other than the electricity supply sector came to 829 (down by 11.6% on a year-on-year basis), covering a total area of 1,076 ha (down by 2.4% on a year-on-year basis). As a reference, businesses in the electricity supply sector account for 55.7% (1,044 locations) of the total number of the new factory locations (1,873) and 85.7% (6,458 ha) of the total area of new factory locations (7,534 ha).
