Recall of Electric Kettles (T-fal) Imported by Groupe SEB Japan Co., Ltd. (Replacement)

A serious product accident involving an electric kettle (brand name: T-fal) imported by Groupe SEB Japan Co., Ltd. has occurred, causing the product to ignite and burn its surroundings. The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) received a report on this event and announced it as a serious product accident on February 21, 2014, in accordance with Article 35 (1) of the Consumer Product Safety Act, which concerns accidents of unclear origin in a product other than a gas or oil appliance.

The cause of the accident is under investigation, but it is thought that a deformed contact in the boil-dry safety device, a defective part mixed with regular parts, may have been unable to work appropriately to stop the product boiling dry, causing the product to overheat abnormally and to ignite and burn its surroundings.

Since January 2007, Groupe SEB Japan has been inspecting and replacing the products in question, including the same model as the product above, free of charge on a voluntary basis, suspecting that the boil-dry safety function of such products may not work correctly. However, the product above is one of the products that have already passed the inspection and have been returned to their owners.

Based on this fact, to prevent further accidents, on April 17, 2014, the company announced on its website that it will replace the products in question, including those that were already inspected but not replaced.

METI would like to alert consumers who have purchased the products in question that they should receive product replacement to prevent any further accidents.
