Joint Release with the Consumer Affairs AgencyRecall of Electric Clothes Dryers Manufactured by Sanyo Electric Co., Ltd. (Free Inspection and Repair)

Serious product accidents involving electric clothes dryers manufactured by Sanyo Electric Co., Ltd. occurred, causing the products to ignite and burn the surroundings.

These accidents were announced as serious product accidents on July 27, 2012, in accordance with Article 35 (1) of the Consumer Product Safety Act, which relates to an accident of unclear origin in a product other than a gas or oil appliance.

To prevent further accidents, on May 19, 2014, Sanyo has announced on its website that the company will provide free inspection and repair for the products subject to the recall.

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) would like to alert consumers who have purchased the products in question that they should receive free inspection and repair from the company in order to prevent any further accidents.

1. Nature of the accident and recurrence-prevention measures

1) Nature of the accident

Three serious product accidents involving electric clothes dryers manufactured by Sanyo Electric Co., Ltd. occurred, causing the products to ignite and burn the surroundings, and were reported to METI in accordance with Article 35 (1) of the Consumer Products Safety Act (Control Nos. A201000606, A201100281, and A201200303).

The cause of the accidents is considered to be that water entered from the joint between the front panel and control panel of the products in question, dripped onto a relay under the panels and reached inside, leading to tracking phenomena and causing the products to smoke and ignite.

Consequently, the exact cause of the three serious accidents was not identified, but METI finished the investigation, since the fire was thought to occur near the relay terminal, and publicized the cause.

No injuries have occurred as a result of the three accidents.

2) Recurrence-prevention measures

To prevent further accidents, Sanyo has publicized the occurrence of the accident and the provision of free inspection and repair concerning the products in question* on its website on May 19, 2014, and will do so in newspapers on May 20, 2014.

*Note: The free inspection and repair service also applies to other types of products with the same structures as the products in question, since the same fault may occur in them.
