Joint Press Release with the Consumer Affairs AgencyRecall of Laptop Computer Battery Packs Manufactured by Panasonic Corporation (Replacement of the Products)

Serious product accidents involving a battery pack for laptop computers manufactured by Panasonic Corporation occurred, causing the products to ignite and to burn their surroundings.

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) received a report on the accidents as serious product accidents and announced them on February 18, 2014, in accordance with Article 35 (1) of the Consumer Product Safety Act, which relates to an accident of unclear origin in a product other than a gas or oil appliance.

To prevent further accidents, on May 28, 2014, the company announced on its website that it requests owners of the relevant laptop computers to remove the battery pack and that it will replace the products in question free of charge.

METI would like to alert consumers who have purchased the products in question to make use of the replacement service offered by the company in order to prevent any further accidents.

1. Nature of the accident and recurrence-prevention measures

1) Nature of the accident

Two serious product accidents involving battery packs for a laptop computer manufactured by Panasonic Corporation occurred, causing the products to ignite and to burn their surroundings. The accidents were reported to METI in accordance with Article 35 (1) of the Consumer Products Safety Act (Control Nos. A201300737 and A201300782, which were announced as accidents "involving laptop computers").

Another similar accident involving the products in question occurred when an owner used the product overseas after buying it in Japan.

The cause of the accidents is under investigation, but it is considered that a manufacturing defect in the battery packs caused the battery cell to overheat, igniting the products in question.

No injuries have occurred as a result of the three accidents.
