Joint Press Release with the Consumer Affairs AgencyAlert to Purchasers to Stop Using Bathroom-installed Heater Dryers Manufactured by Harman Pro Co., Ltd. (currently Harman Co., Ltd.)

A serious product accident involving a bathroom-installed heater dryer manufactured by Harman Pro Co., Ltd. (currently Harman Co., Ltd.) occurred, causing the product to ignite and to damage the surroundings.

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) received a serious product accident report regarding the accident and announced it on May 23, 2014, in accordance with Article 35 (1) of the Consumer Product Safety Act, which relates to an accident of unclear origin in a product other than a gas or oil appliance.

To prevent further accidents, on May 29, 2014, Harman Co., Ltd., and its retailers, namely, Noritz Corporation, Osaka Gas Co., Ltd. and Tokyo Gas Co., Ltd., who sell the appliances under their own brands, announced on their websites and in notices sent to known purchasers of the products that they will request owners of the products in question to stop using the products when a specific error message is indicated on the control panel and that the companies will provide a parts replacement service immediately as the parts become available.

METI would like to alert consumers who have purchased the products in question to stop using them when such error message is indicated on the control panel, and it will continue to alert such purchasers to make use of the parts replacement service offered by the companies in order to prevent any further accidents.

1. Nature of the accident and recurrence-prevention measures

1) Nature of the accident

A serious product accident involving a bathroom-installed heater dryer manufactured by Harman Pro Co., Ltd. (currently Harman Co., Ltd.) occurred, causing the product to ignite and to damage the surroundings. The accident was reported to METI in accordance with Article 35 (1) of the Consumer Products Safety Act (Control No. A20140009).

The cause of the accident is under investigation, but it is considered that error message "68" was indicated on the control panel of the product, shutting down the product, and that repetitive control operations on the control panel to eliminate the error message caused the product to ignite.

Since June 2006, the same models of the product have been recalled for inspection and parts replacement free of charge, but the nature of the accident for this recall is different.

2) Measures to prevent recurrence

To prevent further accidents, on May 29, 2014, the companies announced on their websites and in notices sent to known purchasers of the products that they will request owners of the products to stop using the products when a specific error message is indicated on the control panel and that the companies will provide a parts replacement service immediately as the parts become available (specific date not determined yet).
