The Second Japan-Indonesia Policy Dialogue on Distribution to be Held

On June 20, 2014, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) will hold the Second Japan-Indonesia Policy Dialogue on Distribution (at director-general level) in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, between METI and the Ministry of Trade of Indonesia.

Following on from the first dialogue, at the second dialogue, both sides will continue to aim to enhance the relationship between Japan and Indonesia in the field of distribution and also to improve the business environment in Indonesia.

1. Background

In November 2013, METI held the First Japan-Indonesia Policy Dialogue on Distribution in Tokyo between METI and the Ministry of Trade of Indonesia, aiming to enhance the Japan-Indonesia relationship in the field of distribution. At the meeting, both sides shared knowledge on each other’s domestic distribution policies. Based on this, METI requested Indonesia to eliminate and relax investment regulations imposed on foreign distributors, together with local content requirements* in Indonesia.

However, Indonesia has been showing movement toward further strengthening regulations, including broadening the coverage of such investment regulations and local content requirements since the first dialogue was held.

In this context, METI will hold the second dialogue on June 20, 2014, in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Following the first dialogue, at the second dialogue, both sides will continue to aim to enhance the relationship between Japan and Indonesia in the field of distribution and also to improve the business environment in Indonesia.

*Note: Local content requirements refer to a policy measure under which the local government requires foreign-invested enterprises that develop business in the country to buy or use domestic-origin products or products supplied from domestic sources.
