Japan Patent OfficeA High-level Meeting on Intellectual Property was held in Togo

Mr. Hideo Hato, Commissioner of the Japan Patent Office (JPO), participated in a high-level meeting on intellectual property organized in the Republic of Togo, on June 10 and 11. Mr. Hato also held meetings with Togolese officials, above all H.E. Dama Dramani, President of the National Assembly, as well as heads of Intellectual Property Offices in African countries who also participated in the meeting.

The “High-level Meeting for African Intellectual Property Organization (OAPI) Member Countries and Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti and Madagascar,” financed by the Government of Japan through its Funds-in-Trust arrangement with World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) for Africa and the Least Developed Countries (LDCs)*, was held in Togo, on June 10 and 11, 2014. JPO Commissioner Hato participated and made a keynote speech. He also had meetings with H.E. Dama Dramani, President of the National Assembly; H.E. Octave Nicoue Broohm, Minister of Higher Education & Research; and heads of Intellectual Property Offices in some African countries. He is the first JPO Commissioner to visit Africa in thirty years and the first to visit Togo.

In these meetings, the African officials stated appreciation for the support Japan has already provided to improve intellectual property system and also expressed a strong expectation of continued support and cooperation from Japan to African regions. The JPO will maintain close cooperative relationship with WIPO and will continue to contribute to developing the intellectual property system in Africa.

In FY2008, the Government of Japan established a voluntary Funds-in-Trust for Africa and LDCs with WIPO to support them to develop their intellectual property system. The Funds-in-Trust aim to raise public awareness on the intellectual property system, to develop human resources to take charge of managing and utilizing the system, as well as to develop and enhance the system and relevant organizations in African nations. The meeting was held as a part of the fund’s activities.
