METI to Call for Applicants for FY2014 Diversity Management Selection 100

On June 18, 2014, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) started calling for applicants for the FY2014 Diversity Management Selection 100 (METI Minister Award) project, aiming to broadly introduce the efforts made by enterprises to exercise outstanding diversity management policies to the public in order to encourage enterprise-based initiatives leading to more proactive utilization of a greater variety of untapped human resources.

METI inaugurated the project in FY2012, and FY2014 is scheduled to be the final year that such outstanding enterprises are recognized.

1. Outline of the project

To overcome deflation and shift the economy toward new value creation, it is necessary for Japan to provide increasingly diverse human resources, including women, foreign people, the elderly, and people with disabilities, with opportunities to exercise their potential to the greatest extent possible and to take part in value creation processes.

From this viewpoint, METI launched the project in FY2012, aiming to recognize and convey proactive efforts toward implementing diversity management in enterprises in a variety of sectors and with a variety of scales as those having management capability that contribute to Japan’s economic growth, through which the base upon which diversity management will expand. The efforts of those enterprises selected and recognized are broadly promoted through the Internet and booklets, and it is also expected that this publication will lead to the further acquisition of excellent human resources by such enterprises.

In addition, through the Diversity Promotion Project Commendation (METI Minister Award), METI will also recognize enterprises that take actions to expand the base upon which other enterprises are able to promote diversity management, including those providing consulting services to support other enterprises that endeavor to promote diversity management or those conveying information on diversity management to the markets.

Note 1: Diversity management is a strategy under which enterprises conduct management so as to create innovation and generate value by utilizing a variety of human resources and providing them with opportunities where they are able to exercise their maximum potential.
