Joint Press Release with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and CommunicationsOECD Global Forum on the Knowledge Economy will be Held

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) will hold a Global Forum on the Knowledge Economy (GFKE) as a part of the events for commemorating the 50th anniversary of Japan's accession to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The potential of big data and significant impacts of such data on economy, society and innovation will be shared at the forum. In addition, global issues that should be solved to further advance the utilization of big data will be discussed.

1. Outline of the OECD Global Forum on the Knowledge Economy

The OECD inaugurated the GFKE in 2011, aiming to discuss global policy issues that should be tackled multilaterally. Since then the forum has been held annually with stakeholders from a variety of fields, including people from enterprises, academia, and government officials.

To celebrate the year of 2014, which marks the 50th anniversary of Japan’s accession to the OECD, the fourth forum will be held in Japan, focusing on the utilization of data, as a subject related to knowledge based capital, a new source of growth.

In the future, everything will be connected to the Internet, and this will enable people to compare and analyze a wide variety of data, i.e. big data, obtained from the Internet. As a result of such comparison and analysis, people will also be able to gain a variety of knowledge that will help to cope with many challenges that the current economy and society are facing, as well as promote and create new added value of businesses. In the meantime, to fully utilize big data, it is indispensable to formulate measures for adequately protecting privacy, developing skills for fully analyzing data, and allowing users to access open data.

To achieve this goal, METI and the MIC will hold the two-day GFKE in a panel discussion format, with experts from worldwide enterprises, academia and government officials attending. At the forum, participants will introduce current efforts that they have been taking and will show future approaches toward goals, focusing on the subjects about how to promote the data driven economy, address the Disaster Big Data (disaster management with big data), the aging society, and protect privacy.
