Agency for Natural Resources and EnergyYour Cooperation Needed in the Summer Energy Conservation Campaign 2014-A platform created for encouraging the public to cooperate in energy conservation measures-

The Government of Japan has been conducting the Energy Conservation Campaign, particularly in Central and Western Japan, where the supply and demand balance of electricity is expected to be tighter than in other areas in this summer. At the same time, the Government is also endeavoring to take measures for avoiding unscheduled shutdowns of power plants as much as possible, including full inspections of thermal power plants, so as to secure the electricity supply.

In addition, the Government will create a new website, in collaboration with the Smart Life Japan Promotion Forum,* on which the Government will call for applicants to tackle [i] efforts as businesses that encourage general consumers to cooperate in energy conservation and [ii] efforts as businesses that proactively engage in internal energy conservation, and will introduce such efforts to the public.

In response to the report on the tight supply-demand balance of electricity expected in the summer of FY2014, the Government of Japan has been conducting the campaign, particularly in Central and Western Japan, where the supply and demand balance is expected to be tighter than in other areas in this summer, and is endeavoring to take measures to avoid as much as possible unscheduled shutdowns of power plants, including full inspections of thermal power plants, so as to secure the nation’s electricity supply.

However, as August arrives, the rise in temperatures is expected to increase electricity demand, while full operation of thermal power plants may cause unscheduled shutdowns, which would lead to a decrease in electricity supply. To provide a stable electricity supply-demand balance over the summer, it is important for the demand side, as well as the supply side, to take measures for energy conservation. In particular, it is indispensable to request the public to cooperate in reducing consumption at peak demand hours, mainly from 13:00 to 16:00.

To achieve this goal, the Government decided to start new initiatives to enhance the current campaign, in collaboration with the Smart Life Japan Promotion Forum.

Specifically, on July 24, 2014, the Government will launch a new website (Smart Life Japan Promotion Forum: http://smart-life-japan.jp/cp/ External Site Link (in Japanese)), on which it will call for applicants to tackle [i] efforts as businesses that encourage general consumers to cooperate in energy conservation and [ii] efforts as businesses that proactively engage in internal energy conservation, and will introduce such efforts to the public. This website will contribute to promoting general consumers and businesses to further cooperate in energy conservation efforts. Such efforts of applicants will be introduced on the website from August 1, 2014, a commemoration day when the Government calls for public attention to cooperate in energy conservation over the summer. The Government wishes many businesses to apply for the initiatives when they proactively make use of new ideas and technology.

*Note: The Smart Life Japan Promotion Forum is an association led by the private sector composed of house appliance manufacturers, retailers, consumer associations, municipalities, and other entities, aiming to realize a smart life in which people are able to efficiently and smartly use energy.
