Winners of the Eighth Kids Design Awards

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) hereby announces that winners of the eighth Kids Design Awards have been selected. A record-high number of 408 applicants applied for the award. Among such applicants, METI selected one winner for the Grand Award (Prime Minister Award), titled “Mazda Technology for Kids,” developed by Mazda Motor Corporation.

1. Outline of the Kids Design Awards

  • The Kids Design Awards is a program aiming to recognize outstanding works with designs that realize and disseminate the philosophies of kids’ designs, namely, designs to contribute to the safety and security of children, designs to develop the creativity and create the future of children, and designs to comfortably raise children.
  • FY2013 marks the eighth holding of the awards, for which a record-high number of 408 applicants applied. Among such applicants, one winner for the Prime Minister Award, four winners for the METI Minister Awards, two winners for the Minister of State for Measures for Declining Birthrate Awards and four winners for the Minister of State for Consumer Affairs and Food Safety Award were selected.
  • The program was organized by the Kids Design Association, a non-profit organization (NPO) approved by the Cabinet Office (main office: Minato Ward, Tokyo; Chaired by Mr. Isami Wada). The organization was established in May 2006, currently consisting of 92 enterprises and associations from a variety of sectors, including 54 enterprises, 21 municipalities, and other adviser entities.

  • Title of work: Mazda Technology for Kids

METI Minister Awards (four winners)

[i] Excellence Award: Designs to contribute to safety and security from children’s viewpoints; Category: Children

In this category, an outstanding product, facility and service directly for children from the age of zero to 15 is recognized for its thoughtful design concerning children’s safety.

  • Title of work: Nikke Garden Court Hanamizuki, a community in which residents support families with small children, which fosters children’s zest for life (Ichinomiya City, Aichi Prefecture)
  • Name of company/entity: Sekisui House, Ltd. (Osaka Prefecture)

[ii] Excellence Award: Designs to contribute to safety and security from children’s viewpoints; Category: General

In this category, an outstanding product, facility and service for people in general, including children, is recognized for its thoughtful design concerning children’s safety in the case of their touching such products.

  • Title of work: Home-delivery box
  • Name of company/entity: Japan Delivery System Corporation (Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture)

[iii] Excellence Award: Designs to develop the creativity and create the future of children; Category: KANSEI and creativity

In this category, an outstanding work with a novel idea, method and ingenuity is recognized for its design that cultivates children’s creativity, sensibility and five senses, and motivates children to try creative activities.

  • Title of work: Trial Square, Mitsubishi Minatomirai Industrial Museum (Space Project) (Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture)
  • Name of company/entity: Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (Minato Ward, Tokyo), Tanseisha Co., Ltd. (Taito Ward, Tokyo)

[iv] Excellence Award: Designs to develop the creativity of children and create a future for them; Category: Children’s potential for learning and understanding

In this category, an outstanding work with a novel idea, method and ingenuity is recognized for its design that motivates children to gain a variety of knowledge, including knowledge concerning communities, history and traditional crafts, improve athletic ability, and participate in sport activities.

  • Title of work: A series of picture books, titled “Honto no Ookisa” (Life-size animals)
  • Name of company/entity: Gakken Education Publishing Co., Ltd. (Shinagawa Ward, Tokyo)
