Announcement of Winners of the FY 2014 Awards for Resources Recirculation Technologies and Systems

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) hereby announces that the winners of the FY 2014 Awards for Resources Recirculation Technologies and Systems have been determined. METI is a supporter of this program.

The presentation ceremony will be held at Kikaishinko-kaikan from 10:00 am on October 17, 2014. Following the ceremony, the winners will give presentations on their projects that have been recognized.

1. Purpose and summary

This awards program was launched in 1975, with the aim of extensively calling for and recognizing outstanding projects and efforts by companies and other industrial groups with excellent technologies that contribute to waste reduction, reuse and recycling, thereby encouraging and fostering such efforts and creating new business. The program is organized by the Japan Environmental Management Association for Industry (JEMAI), with the support of METI.

2. Entries and examination

JEMAI started accepting entries in February 2014 by sending application guidance to municipal governments, chambers of commerce and industry, and major industry associations across Japan, while also making the guidance available on its website. During the entry period, which ended on April 18, JEMAI received 23 entries from a variety of areas in Japan.

The examination committee of experts (chairman: Takashi Nakamura, professor at the Research Center for Sustainable Science & Engineering, Institute of Multidisciplinary Research for Advanced Materials, Tohoku University) examined the entries and chose the winners of the METI Minister’s Awards, the Awards of the Director-General of the Industrial Science and Technology Policy and Environment Bureau, the JEMAI Chairman’s Awards, the Encouragement Awards, and the Rare Metal Recycling Awards.

3. Details of the winners

METI Minister’s Awards (two projects)
Title of project:
Detoxifying and recycling secondary fly ash and EAF dust during MF furnace process treatment (Miike Smelting Co., Ltd., Omuta City, Fukuoka Prefecture)
Title of project:
Recovering and recycling artificial fluorite from hydrofluoric acid waste fluids
(Yokkaichi Plant, Semiconductor and Storage Products, Toshiba Corporation, Yokkaichi City, Mie Prefecture; Chiba Plant, Asahi Glass, Co., Ltd., Ichihara City, Chiba Prefecture; Organo Corporation, Koto Ward, Tokyo)

Awards of the Director-General of the Industrial Science and Technology Policy and Environment Bureau (three projects)
Title of project:
A business model established for recycling resources for own rental service products (Kakegawa Office, NEC Platforms, Ltd., Kakegawa City, Shizuoka Prefecture)
Title of project:
A new system for the filling of beverages: Realization of sustainable consumption (Ito En, Co., Ltd., Shibuya Ward, Tokyo; Toyo Sekikan, Co., Ltd., Shinagawa Ward, Tokyo)
Title of the project:
Reusing mineral wool cotton by solidifying it into bricks (Nichiasu Ceratec Corporation, Iizuna Town, Nagano Prefecture; Sakai Nichiasu Corporation, Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture)

4. Presentation ceremony

This year’s presentation ceremony will be held at Kikaishinko-kaikan (3-5-8, Shibakoen, Minato Ward, Tokyo) from 10:00 am on Friday, October 17, 2014.

Following the ceremony, the winners will give presentations on the projects that have been recognized.
