Joint Press Release with the Consumer Affairs AgencyRecall of Air Conditioners and Air Purifiers Manufactured by Daikin Industries, Ltd. (Free Inspection and Repair)

Serious product accidents involving air conditioners and air purifiers manufactured by Daikin Industries, Ltd. occurred, causing the products to ignite and burn.

These accidents were announced as serious product accidents, in accordance with Article 35 (1) of the Consumer Product Safety Act, which relates to an accident of unclear origin in a product other than a gas or oil appliance.

To prevent further accidents, on October 17, 2014, Daikin Industries has announced on its website that the company will provide free inspection and repair for the products subject to the recall, and other types of products with the same structures as the products in question.

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) would like to alert consumers who have purchased the products in question that they should receive free inspection and repair from the company in order to prevent any further accidents.

1. Nature of the accident and recurrence-prevention measures

1) Nature of the accident

Ten serious product accidents involving air conditioners (8 cases) and air purifiers (2 cases) manufactured by Daikin Industries, Ltd. occurred, causing the products to ignite and burn, and were reported to METI in accordance with Article 35 (1) of the Consumer Products Safety Act (Control Nos.: Air conditioners: A200800810, A201100105, A201200302, A201100811, A201200669, A201300513, A201300565, A201300796; Air purifiers: A201000936, A201200241).

The cause of the accidents is under investigation but it is considered to be that fan-motors in indoor unit of the air conditioners and those in the air purifiers became defective due to a manufacturing failure, and the defective fan-motors caused a short circuit in the electric components (chip capacitor*) built in the motors, leading to excessive current flowing to the electric circuits as well as overheating and ignition in the fan-motors, and causing the products to smoke and ignite.

*Note: Chip capacitors are electric components in which electricity is stored and released so as to remove noise (unnecessary electric signals) in electrical circuits.

In addition, five similar accidents have been reported to the National Institute of Technology and Evaluation (NITE) as those not falling under the provision of Article 35 (1) of the Consumer Products Safety Act.

2) Recurrence-prevention measures

To prevent further accidents, Daikin Industries, Ltd. has publicized the occurrence of the accident on its website on October 17. It will also make a company announcement in newspapers on October 18 and will provide free inspection and repair concerning the products in question, including other types of products with the same structures as the products in question.*
*Note: The free inspection and repair service also applied to other types of products with the same structures as the products in question, since the same fault may occur in them.
