METI and TSE to Select Health & Productivity Stock Selection

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) decided to jointly select enterprises that focus on and strategically carry out health and productivity management for their employees, as the FY2014 “Brand of Companies Enhancing Corporate Value through Health and Productivity Management (Health & Productivity Stock Selection).” The brands will be announced around March 2015.

Outline of the brands

This program is one of the actions for achieving the goal titled “extending the nation’s healthy life expectancy,” set in the Japan Revitalization Strategy.

Health and productivity management is an approach in which enterprises focus on and strategically carry out efforts with regard to their employees’ health from the viewpoint of management. Investing in employees’ health management based on corporate philosophy is expected to vitalize business organizations including enhancing employees’ vitality and productivity, leading to improving enterprises’ performance as well as stock prices.

Under the program, METI and TSE will select outstanding enterprises in terms of their health and productivity management from among the listed enterprises, and introduce them as attractive enterprises to investors who prioritize the improvement of corporate value from a long-term perspective. Through this program, METI and TSE will aim to encourage enterprises to further tackle efforts for health and productivity management.

To evaluate enterprises based on a viewpoint of introducing health and productivity initiatives from a variety of aspects ranging from top management to employees in the field, METI will put emphasis on certain criteria including: health and productivity management positioned in the management philosophy and policies; an organized framework established for tackling health and productivity management; specific systems established for tackling health-conscious management as well as measures introduced for carrying them out; measures established for assessing and improving health and productivity management; and observation of laws and regulations.

METI will conduct a survey targeting all of the listed enterprises to ascertain the actual state of such enterprises’ efforts for keeping their employees healthy as well as their results. Based on the analysis and assessment results of the survey, METI and TSE will select outstanding enterprises as Brand of Companies Enhancing Corporate Value through Health and Productivity Management (Health & Productivity Stock Selection). This process will be commissioned to a consortium titled “Research project for assessing the health and productivity of enterprises,” represented by Nikkei Research Inc.

Note: Survey sheets will be sent to all of the listed enterprises not only on the TSE but also on other stock exchanges.
