Joint press release with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and CommunicationsBasic Survey on the Information and Communications Industry (Preliminary Report)

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) compiled the fifth survey results (preliminary report) of the Basic Survey on the Information and Communications Industry, a joint survey program to comprehensively evaluate the overall status of Japan’s information and communications industry.

1. Summarized results

(1) Profile of companies engaged in the information and communications business

1. The number of companies engaged (primarily or otherwise) in the information and communications business*1 was 5,408. Their sales from the information and communications business in FY2013 were worth ¥43,182.2 billion (total sales of all the companies, including sales in areas other than the information and communications business, were worth ¥70,285.1 billion).

Concerning the sales related to the information and communications business, telecommunications and broadcasting business, followed by information services reported the highest sales. These sectors accounted for 71.8% of sales in the information and communications business as a whole.

Reference: The sales from the information and communication business of the companies which answered the survey for two consecutive years were worth ¥41,497.0 billion (a 2.2% increase from the previous fiscal year).

*Note 1: “Information and communications business” refers to: telecommunications business; broadcasting business; broadcast program production business; Internet based service business; information service business; and video picture, sound information, character information production and distribution business.

2. The number of companies classified as information and communications companies (companies whose sales the information and communications business accounts for the larger portion of their other businesses) was 4,632, and their sales totaled ¥44,239.0 billion (of which ¥40,626.4 billion comes from the information and communications business).

Sales per company were ¥9.55 billion (a 3.6% increase from the previous fiscal year), with the highest figure indicated by telecommunications companies, followed by newspaper companies and software development companies.

(2) Telecommunications and broadcasting business

The number of companies engaged in the telecommunications and broadcasting business was 1,073, and their sales for FY2013 totaled ¥16,859.8 billion. When classified by business, the sales figure was ¥13,587.4 billion for telecommunications business, ¥2,159.2 billion for private sector broadcasting business, and ¥456.2 billion for cable television broadcasting business.

Reference: The companies which answered the survey for two consecutive years recorded sales of ¥15,921.8 billion (a 1.3% increase from the previous fiscal year).

(3) Broadcast program production business

The number of companies engaged in the broadcast program production business was 421, and their sales for FY2013 totaled ¥379.1 billion.

Sales per company were ¥900 million (a 4.7% increase from the previous fiscal year).

Reference: The companies which answered the survey for two consecutive years recorded sales of ¥273.7 billion (a 2.2% increase from the previous fiscal year).

(4) Internet based service business

The number of companies engaged in the Internet based service business was 577, and their sales for FY2013 totaled ¥1,725.6 billion (a 23.0% increase from the previous fiscal year). When classified by service,*2 sales in the web contents delivery business showed the highest figure.

Sales per company marked ¥2.99 billion (a 17.7% increase from the previous fiscal year), marking an increase for the first time in two years.

Reference: The companies which answered the survey for two consecutive years recorded sales of ¥1,492.7 billion (a 19.2% increase from the previous fiscal year).

*Note 2: Major sectors in this field are: web contents delivery business, shopping website management business, and SNS and other networks management business.

(5) Information service business

The number of companies engaged in the information service business was 3,366, and their sales for FY2013 were ¥14,144.3 billion (a 1.0% increase from the previous fiscal year), marking an increase for four consecutive years. When classified by sector,*3 the number of customized software development companies marked the highest figure.

Sales per company were worth ¥4.20 billion (a 1.5% increase from the previous fiscal year), marking an increase for four consecutive years.

Reference: The companies which answered the survey for two consecutive years recorded sales of ¥13,124.3 billion (a 3.4% increase from the previous fiscal year).

*Note 3: Major sectors in this field are: customized software development companies, data processing service companies, and game software development companies.

(6) Video picture, sound information, character information production and distribution business

The number of companies engaged in the video picture, sound information, character information production and distribution business was 708, and their sales for FY2013 were ¥2,867.7 billion (remaining the same as those of the previous fiscal year). When classified by sector,*4 the sales of newspaper companies marked the highest figure.

Sales per company were worth ¥4.05 billion (a 0.5% decrease from the previous fiscal year).

Reference: The companies which answered the survey for two consecutive years recorded sales of ¥2,568.9 billion (a 1.3% decrease from the previous fiscal year).
