Announcement of a Collection of the Best Practices Titled “50 Leading Companies for Women in APEC”

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has been conducting a project titled “50 Leading Companies for Women in APEC,” in which participating APEC economies will share information on the best practices of about 50 leading companies in the APEC region that are excellent at supporting active participation by women. As one of the efforts under the project, METI compiled 48 companies’ initiatives from 14 APEC economies into a collection of the best practices, and hereby announces it.

1. Outline of “ 50 Leading Companies for Women in APEC”

The project objectives are [i] to raise awareness of women’s economic contributions to business activities today, and [ii] contribute towards greater opportunities for women to take on more leadership roles and to be further included into economic activities. To achieve these objectives, the project has selected approximately 50 exemplary companies and organizations from the APEC region to share their efforts in increasing opportunities for women with stakeholders in the APEC region and beyond.

In June 2014, APEC endorsed the project proposed by Japan (METI) under the Policy Partnership on Women and the Economy (PPWE). Between June and October 2014, the project went through following process: [i] setting the criteria for recommendation by economies and stakeholders in the region, namely, higher level in their economies in terms of the ratios of women promoted to managerial positions, senior leadership and decision making roles; [ii] offering recommendations of nominated companies and organizations by economies; [iii] sending and collecting questionnaires to companies and organizations; and [iv] compiling the specific case examples of the selected companies and organizations. After passing through these stages, METI compiled the nominated companies’ efforts into the collection, and the PPWE finally endorsed it.
