Announcement of Winners of the FY2014 Eighth METI Minister’s Awards for Best Contributors to Product Safety-Honoring Companies Highly Committed to Product Safety-

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) launched the Best Contributors to Product Safety Awards program in FY2007 with the aim of encouraging private enterprises to make a greater commitment to improving product safety as well as to firmly establish the concept of the value of product safety in Japanese society.

METI hereby announces that it selected 17 enterprises and organizations as winners of the FY2014 Best Contributors to Product Safety Awards. The awards ceremony to recognize these winners will take place during the Product Safety Inspection Seminar held in Tokyo on November 20, 2014.

1. Outline of the Awards

Best Contributors to Product Safety Awards

1) Eligibility of applicants for the awards

Manufacturers, importers and retailers of daily consumer products

2) Examination procedures

The examination committee of academic experts, representatives of consumers associations, and other entities examines applicants’ commitment to product safety. In FY2014, the committee selected applicants through documentary examination as the primary examination (July), the presentation session of screened applicants as the secondary examination (September), and examiners’ tours of the applicants’ sites for interviewing them (September and October), and finalized the winners at the final examination held at the committee’s meeting in October.

3) Examination criteria

The committee evaluated the applicants’ systems for securing their product safety based on four criteria:

[i] Commitment to manufacturing or selling safe products;
[ii] Commitment to helping users handle products safely;
[iii-a] Commitment to appropriately addressing problems in product safety emerging after shipping products (for the manufacturing and import sectors);
[iii-b] Commitment to appropriately addressing problems in products such as accidents and recalls (for the retail sector); and
[iv] Commitment to establishing a culture of safety in terms of products.

Associations or enterprises that are involved in business concerning daily consumer products

2) Examination procedures

The examination committee of academic experts, representatives of consumers associations, and other entities examine applicants’ commitment to product safety. In FY2014, the committee selected applicants through documentary examination as the primary examination (July), and examiners’ tours of the applicants’ sites for interviewing them (September and October), and finalized the winners at the final examination held at the committee’s meeting in October.

3) Examination criteria

The committee evaluated the applicants’ measures for securing their product safety based on two criteria:

[i] Commitment to securing and supporting product safety; and
[ii] Commitment to establishing a culture of safety in terms of products.

4. Awards ceremony

The awards ceremony to announce and recognize these winners will take place during the 9th Product Safety Inspection Seminar, as part of Product Safety Inspection Week, an annual event held for one week, from November 17, this year. At the ceremony, the winners of the METI Minister’s Awards will make presentations.
