Survey of Factory Location Trends in the First Half of FY2014 (January-June) (Preliminary Report)

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) conducted a Survey of Factory Location Trends targeting businesses in manufacturing, electricity supply, gas supply, and heating supply sectors that acquired 1,000 m2 or more of land in the first half of FY2014 (January-June) for the purpose of constructing factories. METI hereby announces that it has compiled the results into a report.

Highlights of the results

There were 1,196 new factory locations acquired across Japan between January and June 2014 (up 53.7% on a year-on-year basis), covering a total area of 3,556 ha (up 34.3% on a year-on-year basis).

There were 500 such locations for businesses excluding the electricity supply sector (up 41.6% on a year-on-year basis), covering a total area of 616 ha (up 44.6% on a year-on-year basis).

There were 1,196 new factory locations across Japan, up 53.7% on a year-on-year basis, covering 3,556 ha, up 34.3% on a year-on-year basis.

  • Number of new factory locations: 1,196 locations (778 in the first half of FY2013)
  • Total area of new factory locations: 3,556 ha (2,649 ha in the first half of FY2013)

The number of new factory locations has maintained an increasing trend after the first half of FY2011, and the total area of new factory locations has increased since the first half of FY 2013.

Reference: Factory locations in the areas affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake

There were 303 new factory locations in the seven prefectures affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake (Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi, Fukushima, Ibaraki, Tochigi, and Chiba) (up 89.4% on a year-on-year basis from 160), and the total area of factory locations in these seven prefectures was 1,089 ha (up 125.8% on a year-on-year basis from 482 ha).

In addition, there were 116 new factory locations (excluding the electricity supply sector (up 48.7 % on a year-on-year basis from 78)), and the total area was 159 ha (up 63.1 % on a year-on-year basis from 98 ha).
